Overview:

The Office of the Illinois Attorney General is seeking third-year law students or recent graduates having just taken the Illinois Bar Exam or intending to take the July 2025 Bar Exam to serve in a paid post-graduate law clerk position in our Belleville Office after taking the exam.  The General Law Bureau represents the interests of the State of Illinois and its people in civil trial litigation. The Bureau functions as a defense law firm for the State of Illinois, its officers, agencies and employees. Examples of the areas of law include personal injury, property damage, and injunction cases, administrative hearings and reviews, declaratory judgment actions, federal and state civil rights cases and class actions.

Responsibilities:

The paid post-graduate law clerk will handle cases under Supreme Court Rule 711 and work under the supervision of an assigned licensed attorney.  Post-graduate law clerks in the General Law Bureau defend cases brought against State of Illinois agencies, employees and officers. Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, the post-graduate law clerk will respond to complaints, draft pleadings, draft and respond to motions, proffer and organize written and electronic discovery, conduct depositions, manage mediations and settlements and represent client interests in administrative hearings and various state and federal courts. Travel is required.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have strong organizational and time-management skills, the ability to work in a team environment, and have strong research and writing skills. As a condition of employment, the post-graduate law clerk must have taken the Illinois Bar Examination prior to their start date.

Salary:   

Salary for the position is $54,000 per year.  However, once sworn in as a licensed attorney, the individual can be promoted to Assistant Attorney General and the salary will increase to $81,000 per year.
