OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Legal Assistant performs complex legal assignments with a high degree of independence, requiring extensive paralegal experience, skill and knowledge. Duties include but are not limited to: assisting attorneys with trial preparation, troubleshooting discovery requests, managing large document production projects, conducting legal research and serving as a liaison to other state agencies regarding pending litigation. Working with a team of attorneys, the Legal Assistant prepares a variety of reports and legal documents including briefs, pleadings, memoranda, affidavits, motions, subpoenas, summons, complaints and jury instructions. The Legal Assistant helps coordinate and review the workload of the Paralegal I and Paralegal II staff within their assigned Bureau/Division and serves as the Bureau’s liaison to the Office’s Information Technology Bureau. With input from the Support Staff Coordinator, the Legal Assistant will help coordinate the orientation of new support staff and work to identify and organize training opportunities for existing support staff in their assigned bureau.
Requires at least an Associate Degree in business law, legal studies or related field or completion of an A.B.A. approved paralegal training program and three (3) years of paralegal experience and must have served satisfactorily as a Paralegal II in the Attorney General’s office for at least two years, or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience. Extensive experience using e-discovery software such as Concordance and Relativity is essential. The ability to use legal research tools such as Westlaw and Lexis Nexis, along with experience using Microsoft Excel and Word is required. Excellent verbal and written skills are required. Attendance is an essential function of this position. The ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and the general public is required. Internal candidates with expertise using TeamConnect and/or CLMS and Laserfiche document management tools are preferred.
HOURS OF WORK: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Monday-Friday)
