The Land Acquisition Chicago Bureau monitors, supervises and advises Special Assistant Attorneys General in eminent domain cases pending in the counties of Cook, Will, DuPage, Lake, Kane, and McHenry. The Bureau Chief has various responsibilities including: (1) reviewing cases referred to the Attorney General’s Office by a state agency seeking private property for a public project and then assigning the matter to a Special Assistant Attorney General for the filing of a condemnation complaint; (2) providing guidance to Special Assistant Attorneys General with respect to litigation plans and strategies; (3) reviewing and analyzing settlement recommendations from the Special Assistant Attorneys General; (4) reviewing and approving agreed acquisitions by state agencies and the title commitments for the acquired properties to ensure the State of Illinois is receiving clear title; (5) reviewing and analyzing proposed legislation that concerns land acquisitions by the State of Illinois, including special procedures the acquiring governmental agencies must follow; and (6) monitoring case law affecting land acquisition and eminent domain matters.
Candidates must be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois and should have at least five years’ experience, preferably in the area of eminent domain or other related field such as residential and/or commercial real estate practice. Supervisory experience is preferred. Candidates should also have excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills.
