The mission of the Disability Rights Bureau is to protect and advance the interests of persons with disabilities in Illinois. The Bureau is the sole civil enforcer of the Environmental Barriers Act, the state law that ensures physical access to public facilities. Additionally, the Bureau safeguards the civil rights of all people with disabilities in Illinois by investigating and resolving allegations of disability discrimination under state and federal laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Amendments Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the Illinois Human Rights Act. The Disability Rights Bureau practices in federal court and circuit courts statewide

The Disability Rights Bureau also serves as a resource to other Bureaus in the Attorney Generalís Office. The Bureau proposes and comments on legislation, engages with stakeholders to influence policy, and advises the courts, all in service of its mission to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.

Responsibilities:

An Assistant Attorney General in the Disability Rights Bureau maintains a caseload of investigations regarding policies or practices that allegedly discriminate against people with disabilities, working to resolve each through negotiation, and when necessary, litigation. The Assistant Attorney General provides technical assistance to individuals, businesses and government entities on their obligations under state and federal disability laws. In addition, Assistant Attorneys General participate in training programs and outreach to educate and assist people to understand and comply with these various laws.

Qualifications:

Candidates must be licensed in Illinois at the time of application. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to public interest, excellent writing skills, and be able to interact well with other attorneys and support staff in the Bureau. A strong candidate must also be adept at effective time management, and have an aptitude for investigation and negotiation. Ideal candidates will have three years of experience in public interest advocacy and litigation and knowledge of the various state and federal law relating to the practice area. Salary: Salaries start at $73,548.
