MADIGAN: FRANKLIN COUNTY MAN SUED FOR OPEN DUMPING AT ILLEGAL SALVAGE YARD

Springfield — Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced today a four-count complaint against a Franklin County man for allegedly operating an open dump.

Madigan's complaint alleges that Floyd Burns ran a salvage yard on a 10-acre site located on Hill City Road west of Benton, where the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) uncovered about 100 cars, approximately 100 used tires, scrap metal, discarded furniture, wood scraps and other refuse scattered throughout the site in violation of state environmental safety regulations. After several inspections, the IEPA referred the case to Madigan's office for prosecution.

"This open dump is not just an eyesore, but it poses a potential health hazard in violation of Illinois law," Madigan said.

Each of the counts carries a possible civil penalty of $50,000 and $10,000 per day the violations continue.

Assistant Attorney General Renee Snow is handling the case for Madigan's Environmental Bureau.
