10/29/08 Madigan Launches Three-Pronged Attack Against Deadly Sleep Environments for Infants |

Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Leah Wade, Assistant Attorney General, examine a fatal design flaw in a recalled Delta baby crib during a news conference announcing a three-pronged approach to better protect Illinois consumers. Madigan's action included filing a lawsuit against SFCA, Inc., the distributor of the Simplicity bassinets that have caused two infant deaths, calling on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to implement a refund-only recall policy, and releasing a new, comprehensive guide outlining recalled cribs, bassinets and play yards to help parents identify whether they have these dangerous products in their homes.

Madigan was honored with the first-ever Light of Hope Award for her commitment to improving the lives of abused and neglected children in Illinois .

Attorney General Lisa Madigan joins, from left, Linda Healy, Executive Director of Mutual Ground, Inc., Domestic Violence Shelter; State Sen. Linda Holmes (D-42nd); Julie Rutter, Board Chair of Mutual Ground; and State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia (D-83rd), during a news conference at the shelter in Aurora. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, they discussed the critical work of domestic violence shelters around the state, introduced a domestic violence quiz to raise awareness of how to identify signs of abuse and presented the shelter with a $42,000 grant from the Illinois Violent Crime Victims Assistance Fund, which Madigan’s office administers.

Area law enforcement, prosecutors, teachers, social workers, and parents learned tips from members of Madigan’s staff on how to keep kids safe from predators while using the Internet.

Joined by Assistant Attorneys General in her Consumer Fraud Bureau, Attorney General Lisa Madigan announces an $8.7 billion settlement in her predatory lending lawsuit against Countrywide, the nation's largest mortgage lender and servicer. Madigan led the national settlement with California Attorney General Jerry Brown which included nine other states.

Madigan called on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to develop a second-hand market strategy to curb the sale of dangerous recalled products at online sites like Craigslist and eBay and in community resale shops.
