Tim Gifford, left, an analyst with Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., uses a NITON XL3 Series analyzer to screen the toys and jewelry for lead. The handheld analyzer provides a fast, reliable and nondestructive means of testing for the presence of restricted substances. During the event, approximately 100 old and new toys were brought in to be tested. Of that total, 13 toys were identified as having high lead levels, including eight that had “very high” lead level results.
