There were an estimated at 84,767 forcible rapes reported to law enforcement in 2010. This estimate was 5.0 percent lower than the 2009 estimate and 10.3 percent and 6.7 percent lower than the 2006 and 2001 estimates, respectively (FBI Uniform Crime Report, 2010).

Rapes by force comprised 93.0 percent of reported rape offenses in 2010, and attempts or assaults to commit rape accounted for 7.0 percent of reported rapes.

Statewide Statistics

23,438 sex offenders are registered in Illinois. Of those, 1,992 are juvenile sex offenders (ISP, September 2011)

5,316 criminal sexual assaults were reported in 2009.  In 2008 there were 5,646 reported incidences of criminal sexual assaults.(ISP, Crime Index Offenses/Crime Rate Comparison 2008-2009)

In 2010, 18,349 adult, adolescent and child survivors of sexual assault, child sexual abuse and sexual harassment were served by the sexual assault crisis centers and hotlines of the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ICASA). (Sexual Assault Victims Assisted by ICASA Centers, 2009)

Chicago Statistics

Between March 2010 and March 2011 there were 1,349 reported incidents of criminal sexual assault in the city of Chicago. (Chicago Police Department, CLEARPath Crime Summary Report, March 2011)

Nationwide, women age 12 or older experienced an annual average of 131,950 completed rapes, 98,970 attempted rapes, and 135,550 sexual assaults. (YWCA, Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women, 2010)

Variations By Age

Nationwide, 7.4% of students had ever been physically forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to. Overall, the prevalence of having been forced to have sexual intercourse was higher among female (10.5%) than male (4.5%) students. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Surveillance Summaries, June 2010)

Overall, the prevalence of having been forced to have sexual intercourse was higher among 11th-grade (8.2%) than 9th-grade (6.6%) students. Prevalence of having been forced to have sexual intercourse ranged from 6.4% to 13.2% across state surveys (median: 8.8%) and from 6.0% to 12.0% across local surveys (median: 7.9%).

In Chicago, 9.0% of students had ever been physically forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to. This is down from 11.3% in 2007.

Prevalence of having been forced to have sexual intercourse ranged from 6.0% to 12.0% across local surveys (median: 7.9%).
