Assistant Attorney General - Public Interest - Special Litigation - Chicago

Title: Assistant Attorney General

Division: Public Interest

Bureau: Special Litigation - Chicago

The Special Litigation Bureau primarily handles complex investigations and affirmative litigation, including matters of high sensitivity and potential public policy impact. One of the Bureau’s primary responsibilities is to investigate and litigate cases involving governmental fraud, waste, abuse, and corruption under the Illinois False Claims Act and the state’s ethics laws. The Bureau litigates in state and federal courts and frequently works with a variety of state and federal agencies, including other state attorney general offices and U.S. Attorney offices around the country. The Bureau also participates in legislative review and initiatives and provides litigation support to other bureaus in complex matters, particularly in the areas of civil rights, labor rights, public utilities, and disability rights.

During the past year, the Bureau has played an active role in negotiating and drafting a consent decree with the City of Chicago to implement widespread reform within the Chicago Police Department. In addition, recently the Bureau has handled multi-state investigations and litigation challenging the constitutionality of various federal initiatives, including the federal government’s forcible separation of immigrant families, repeal of net neutrality regulations, and termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) immigration program. While most of its litigation is affirmative, the Bureau occasionally defends the State in high profile lawsuits challenging laws and initiatives such as marriage equality, the State’s pension system, and the expansion of the State’s medical assistance program to cover reproductive services.

Responsibilities:

An Assistant Attorney General in the Special Litigation Bureau is responsible for all aspects of the investigation and litigation of assigned cases, including investigative memoranda, pleadings, discovery, court appearances, witness interviews, depositions, mediations and settlements, and generally representing the interests of the People of the State of Illinois.

Qualifications:

Newly licensed attorneys will not be considered. Candidates should have at least 2 years of litigation experience and be licensed by the State of Illinois at the time of application. A minimum of at least 7 years of litigation experience is preferred. A strong candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to public service work, sound judgment and excellent research and writing skills, and a judicial clerkship or complex litigation experience.

Salary: Salaries start at $62,000.
