The mission of the Civil Rights Bureau is to protect and advance the civil rights guarantees of Illinois residents. The Civil Rights Bureau litigates to enforce civil rights laws and investigates alleged civil rights violations, including allegations of pattern and practice discrimination in housing, public accommodations, employment, and by financial institutions. Recently, the Bureau has been involved in investigations and litigation involving race and national origin discrimination in employment, familial and race discrimination in housing, and sexual orientation discrimination in public accommodations. The Bureau was also involved in two fair lending cases with the Department of Justice, one of which resulted in the largest fair lending settlement in history.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

An Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights bureau builds cases and conducts investigations regarding alleged civil rights violations. Assistant Attorneys General investigate civil rights complaints, draft pleadings, draft and respond to motions, manage mediations and settlements and represent the interests of the People of the State of Illinois in court.

Qualifications

Candidates must be licensed in the State of Illinois at the time of application. At minimum, candidates should have at least three years litigation experience. Candidates must have demonstrated experience in enforcing state and federal civil rights laws, and have demonstrated management skills.

Salary: Salaries begin at $57,000.
